“The HAKA Building is a pre-war factory that Doepel Strijkers is converting into a “clean tech living lab” for eco-friendly water and energy organizations. The project is an experiment of sorts in how socially and environmentally minded architecture can benefit the region. The ultimate goal: A wasteless building. So to cut back on energy and transportation costs, the architects sourced all their materials locally, either second-hand or from demolition sites. You’ve got seating made from the wood of abandoned post-war housing; a meeting room fashioned entirely out of recycled doors; and an acoustic wall created with a whopping 17,700-pound pile of old clothes. you bought your food at the grocery store, but that’s not where it came from.

this article (and the BBC one it links to) are framed largely in negatives, that is, avoiding certain consequences of environmentally irresponsible behavior. while those are certainly valid points, i find that for me, the positives are much more motivating: stimulating my local economy by buying from farmer’s markets, the satisfaction of growing my own food, sharing my garden with friends & strangers, saving serious cash, the amazing difference of fresh clipped cilantro & newly plucked carrots.

For sustainable farming, persistence is more important than profit

the above being true, i don’t consider sustainability to be at odds with profitability (which ought to be considered more broadly to include more than money). by definition, efficiency enhances earnings & improves business systems.
